MODULE 2: Information regarding modules: Modules are the content chunks of the course. You need to follow the directions for reading, viewing, and listening. Throughout the directions, there may be activities to do or questions to answer. These generally require a response in your module response. A module response is your answers, etc. These do not need to be formal essays/short answers they are short answers that demonstrate you have done the reading/activity, etc.

This module continues the information on pre-natal and early development focusing on brain development.

1. Begin by reading about the “Evolution of Child Study.” This is on Canvas (labelled “Wittmer Evolution of Child Study”). This chapter section discusses the evolution of child study and some child development

theorists. Table 1.1 provides brief summaries of several theorists.

 On page 20, reread the section “What Do We Know Now?” Choose one idea, maybe a sentence, which

you feel is a key idea. In your response, tell me the idea/sentence and explain why you think this is key.

 On pg. 13 & 14, the authors mention Hall and Gesell. These theorists provide the idea and early

examples of developmental milestones.

o Watch this narrated power point (in a video). This provides a good foundation for the

information in this module. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDVm2VDEyr4

o Listen/watch for key ideas. In your response, summarize why it is important for early childhood

educators (ECE) to know about Gesell’s theory on development.

o There are some problems with Gesell’s theory. Does the reading or video provide any

information on how this theory explains the development of children with disabilities? Do we

know if Gesell discusses the influence of culture? Write responses to these two questions in

your response.

o Remember we are studying theories. Our parenting philosophy (or pediatrician’s

recommendations) may not align with all theories we study.

o The idea of milestones is currently used. See “Checklists with Tips” on Canvas. This is from CDC

(Center for Disease Control) which provides many resources. We will look at additional

resources in the next module. Why are milestones useful to families? Address this question in

your response.

 We will look at Bowlby, Piaget, Vygotsky and Bandura later in the semester.

2. Read and summarize the Article: The Science of Early Childhood Development.

Be ready to discuss in a breakout room next class.
