SOC 333 Week 1 Discussion 1, Selecting Research Methods Week 1 DC 1 Discuss the importance of the inductive approach in qualitative research.
How does this approach differ from the deductive approach in quantitative research? -When using the inductive approach the research usually makes an observation about the topic at hand from available data but will not lead with a hypothesis as someone would in deductive research. The inductive approach is important in qualitative research because it allows for change when analyzing information. Qualitative research is an approach for browsing and understanding the “meaning individual or groups ascribe to a human or social problem” (Creswell, 2014). The deductive approach differs from inductive because it is used for more current literature. Explain how your philosophical worldview may influence the types of research you are interested in conducting. -My philosophical worldviews may influence the types of research I am interested in conducting as postpositivist. Postpositivist assumption relies on quantitative analysis than qualitative because postpositive is more of a conventional form of research that relates more to the quantitative approach. (Creswell, 2014). The postpositivist assumption is focused on theories that is related to the researcher’s interest. Of the four philosophical worldviews, which do you feel most fits with your own perspective to research? -Of the four philosophical worldviews “Postpositivit” would most likely fit my perspective to research. As I stated in my introduction, I like to do my own research about a topic after something has been said, and I feel like things should be vise- versa. This type of worldview forces researchers to determine if a statement is true or not by further examining the data and evidence. How does the definition and description of research design differ from your initial perception of the concept? -The definition and description of research design differs from my initial perception of the concept because I did not know they had so many ways to conduct research. If you were given a research study to complete in the Ashford online learning setting, which criterion/criteria would figure most prominently in your decision about the research approach to take? For example, is there anything about the mode of online learning or the demographic of the students which would work best with a certain research approach? -I think I would chose to use the mixed method design. The mixed method design approach incorporates elements of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. References: Creswell, J. W., & Plano Clark, V. L. (2011).
