Narrative essay
describe a place and explain its significance. begin your piece by describing the place using sensory details (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) and figurative language, such as similes and metaphors. Place
What place is significant for you? The place could be one with which you have had a long history, such as your favorite beach or hiking trail, or it could be a new or unfamiliar one. Please note the places in the narratives/essays we’ve read: a supermarket, the bar car of a commuter rail line, a beach/surf break, a music festival, an oyster boat. Any place could be significant.

Note: Please avoid writing about popular tourist sites that have already generated lots of writing. If you are not now in the Hawaiian Islands and want to choose a non-Hawai’i place, please e-mail me a brief description of the site for approval.

Describe your experience of the place in detail, using concrete words and phrases and literary devices such as figurative language and sensory details. Walk us through it. What do you see above you? What do you feel at your feet? What do you hear behind you? To what can you compare the smells? Etc.

Significance
Why is this place significant? The significance of the place may be connected to your own history, or Hawai’i’s history, or culture, or its natural, physical aspects, or other relevant background or context.

Do you have a family story that makes this place special? If you have a memorable or significant personal experience about the place, convey it, using narrative techniques such as plot (beginning, middle and end) and characterization. Did something historical happen here? What Hawaiian legends or stories are told about it? What is the significance of its Hawaiian name? What is interesting about its geology, geography, vegetation, animals, etc.? Etc. These questions are not exhaustive. To structure your piece, focus on one coherent question or personal story.
Your revision will be graded according to the following criteria:

Content: Describes a place and conveys its significance through a story or explanation.
Presentation: Presents all of the narrative/descriptive elements.
Grammar, punctuation and mechanics: No grammatical, punctuation and mechanical errors, including fragments, run-ons or comma splices. Uses subordination and parallel phrasing.
